January 31st, 2006 :: “Why?”

Just a sketch today.

You’ve gotten to see a lot of one robot of mine over the last few days, so I thought I’d treat you to someone else’s fabulous robots today. This is from Adam Rex. He has a lot of amazing illustration work on his site. You really need to check out http://www.adamrex.com to see more. You may even find another robot or two!

To finish up, I added a few more details like sweat and some fire highlights on the coal and robot. I also decided to mimic the shape of the fire below the robot, in the massive expanse of coal. I think it adds a little more focus to the center of the piece. That’s it. I had fun painting this, and I hope you’ve had fun watching me. For those of you curious about the technical details, this is acrylic on a (roughly) 9.5″ by 21″ found wood panel.

Help support Robot-A-Day: “Coal Bot” is now for sale in the R-A-D Store.

The next few posts are all going to be from this painting, so I hope you like it. It’s based on an idea that’s been bouncing around my head for a while and I’m pretty proud of how it turned out.
After sketching my idea onto a gessoed piece of found wood, I put in a simple fiery background and start blocking in the coal at the bottom.

I’ve been sweating over a big robot painting I’ve been working on the last few days now, but this here robot beats anything I could give you today. It’s from Jessica Hutchison and yes it’s knitted. I wish I owned this robot, and the chair it’s sitting on, and probably even that skull/Elvis thing on the mantle. Anyways, Jessica has made a whole bunch of wonderful knitted toys. This week’s theme for Illustration Friday is “Cats”. This was a little difficult for me as I don’t think I’ve tried to draw a cat for years, so I kept it sorta sketchy.
For those of you coming to Robot-A-Day from Illustration Friday, welcome. Make sure to check out more posts here before you leave, please. Then keep coming back every day. Thanks.

Just playing around on the ‘puter. Even when I do evil, it’s adorable.
