January 21st, 2006 :: “Just A Box - Stained”

More progress on the box. I liked the idea of wooden robots, so I used ebony wood stain to stain the linework and everything that ISN’T the body of a robot. You’re supposed to put the stain on then wipe it off, which obviously wouldn’t work in this case, so we’ll see how that turns out. My plan is to sand out any stain still above the surface and then either re-stain the entire box with a lighter shade or just give it a nice clear coat if it looks alright.

(EDIT: I wrote this initial post after staining but before sanding. The sanding process was a spec-TACULAR failure. Thankfully, I was able to completely re-strip the box and I’ll be starting over with some different ideas.)

January 20th, 2006 :: “Just A Box - Sketch”

Ever the experimenter, I decided to try something… IN THE 3RD DIMENSION! This box is about 7″ long, 3.5″ wide, and 2.25″ deep. I stripped it and sketched out the robots. The design wraps around all sides except for the bottom. Once I got the hang of visualizing where the lines should go when wrapping over an edge, it was pretty fun. More pictures as this progresses.

January 19th, 2006 :: “R-A-D Store Banner”

Shameless, shameless self-promotion. I’m so sorry you had to see this folks, but this is the robot I did today, so it gets posted. It just so happens to be the banner for the new Robot-A-Day store. Funny how these things work out, isn’t it? I can’t make you want to buy something, but aren’t you just a little bit more intrigued now?

January 18th, 2006 :: “And They’re Made Of Metal”

Lately, I’ve been trying to get back some ability at drawing things other than robots. This started out as just a sketch of the old guy. I’m not sure where the robot came from, it just sort of happened.

I hope Sam Waterston sold this guy some insurance. (Bonus points if you get the reference.)

January 17th, 2006 :: “Saint Ditka”

After the Bears/Panthers game on Sunday, a friend of mine told me I should post a robot watching football. So here it is. Bears in 2006-2007!

It seems I wasn’t the only one thinking “robots” for this week’s Illustration Friday topic, “E Is For”. This one is from Louise. Check out more of her work at http://swimminginink.blogspot.com.

January 15th, 2006 :: “Robot And Monster”

I’ve been busy moving Robot-A-Day over to my own webspace for the last few days. Luckily, Jessica McLeod was swell enough to provide today’s robot for us. If you want to see work that out-cutes even my cutest abilites, (and I know you do) check out more of Jessica’s work. Tiny Monster

January 14th, 2006 :: “IF - E Is For”

This week’s theme for Illustration Friday is “E Is For…” For me today, E was for energy, or moreso the lack of it.

For those of you coming to Robot-A-Day from Illustration Friday, welcome. Make sure to check out more posts here before you leave, please. Then keep coming back every day. Thanks.
