May 31st, 2006 :: “Sample-Bot #007″

I haven’t painted a Sample-Bot in a while, so I did, and this one is sporting a mean “Van Dyke” beard. At last, two of my favorite things in this world, robots and facial hair, finally together. I think I want to do more of these. Does anyone have any favorite facial hair styles they’d like to see on a robot?

As per usual, it’s acrylic on a 2″ by 3″ countertop sample. There’s already a hole in it, all you need is a nail and you’re ready to hang!

May 30th, 2006 :: “Uke-bot Sketches”

Here’s a few preliminary sketches for a commissioned drawing that I’m doing for a friendly friend of mine. She plays the ukelele and is awesome, often at the same time.

May 29th, 2006 :: “Grill-o-tron 5000″

Happy Memorial Day to everyone honoring those who died in service to their country, or to others celebrating the unofficial first day of summer. Today, I plan on cooking something hot and then drinking something(s) cold.

Extra points if you know and love the beer in the background.

May 26th, 2006 :: “The Incredible Shrinking Robot!”

OK, I’m hooked. One more Shrinky Dink robot this week. It’s just so damn cute when it’s that small!

May 25th, 2006 :: “Shrinky Dinks!”

I was killing some time on Tuesday afternoon so I stopped into an art supply store downtown. They had sheets of Shrinky Dink style plastic, and of course I had to buy some. This is my first test piece and includes a one-inch button and my ginormous hands for size reference. It got a bit smudgy because I forgot that ink would take a really long time to dry on plastic.

I am of course completely hooked and am trying to think of all the possible uses: Robot-A-Day magnets, earrings, necklaces, keychains. The list goes on and on. If you have any good ideas, feel free to share.

May 24th, 2006 :: “Better Late Than Never”

Molly McCausland sent me this cute robot the day after last week’s Free-For-All, but I’m totally a sucker for robots with hearts. You can check out her webcomic and more of Molly’s work at http://www.teaforthree.co.uk

May 23rd, 2006 :: “R-A-D PSA”

I probably shouldn’t show this, but it is technically a robot. On Friday night, I went to a meet and greet party for an art group I am a part of, and a bunch of us made name tags/ID cards.

This is a public service announcement for all the kids: DO NOT DRINK AND DRAW! It may seem like a wonderful idea at the time, but it’s that kind of thinking that makes you do things like the thing pictured above. Take it from me, BT, don’t do it. There, I probably just saved someone’s artistic life right now.

May 22nd, 2006 :: “The Winner Is…”

Peter Beare sent in this awesome robot sketch for last Friday’s Free-For-All. It was my favorite of the bunch, so it gets featured today. Peter has some really nice comics and cartoons on his site. Go there now! http://www.dangnabbit.com

May 19th, 2006 ::”R-A-D’s Robot Free-For-All!”

So many robots! Thanks a bunch to everyone who participated in the first Robot-A-Day Free-For-All. Please go and click around to all the various sites, OK? My favorite sketch of the lot will be saved and featured on Monday. If it’s you, don’t tell anyone!

May 18th, 2006 :: “Think Fast, Robot!”

I haven’t used my pens for a while, so I thought I’d do something quick on my lunch break. I’m still getting used to having a job AND doing something for R-A-D everyday, as opposed to being unemployed and having R-A-D be basically a job that doesn’t pay enough.
