October 16th, 2006 :: “For Today I Am A Robot”

Lots of stuff today. This insanely cute piece of robot-ness comes from Lisa Max. I don’t want to discourage other artists from sending me their robot art to feature on the site, but I don’t know if anyone can top this. Please, feel free to try though. I highly recommend a visit to Lisa’s LiveJournal so you can be her friend. http://souldelay.livejournal.com

If you need more proof of how much I like “For Today I Am A Robot,” try this on for size: I am planning on this being my next tattoo. I already have Lisa’s permission, but there’s only one issue, being an art student doesn’t pay very well. So, I’m setting up the “Help BT Get Inked” fund. 10% of all R-A-D Store purchases will go towards the fund, or if you’re feeling generous, you can add to it directly. Even one dollar is that much closer to me going under the needle. It’s a simple design, and I probably won’t get it that big, so it really shouldn’t be too much, but “not too much” is still more than I have. So what do you say folks? Can you spare a little? (There will more than likely be a special gift for all direct donations.) Click on “my” bicep or the PayPal donation button below to add to the fund.

STILL MORE:
I had a very productive weekend. One of the biggest accomplishments was burning screens and printing all three colors on the “DESTROY!!!” print. They will debut at the Stumptown Comics Fest and any leftovers will be for sale here in November.

October 13th, 2006 :: “Asimov Death Bot”

Happy Friday the 13th everybody! I’m super tired, so today’s robot comes from fellow PNCA Illustrationite, Daniel Williams. It’s Isaac Asimov’s head, attached to a robot, so it may be more of a cyborg technically, but I still dig it. It also captures the prowess of Asimov’s amazing sideburns, something I’m sure you’ve all figured out I support by now.

October 12th, 2006 :: “Headaches”

Sometimes I don’t even know.

October 11th, 2006 :: “DESTROY!!!”

I’ve been lagging on my four panel strips lately, so it’s back to the old ways for today’s post! I think I might do this up as a three-color screenprint for the Stumptown Comics Fest.

October 10th, 2006 :: “Fur Is Beautiful”

October 9th, 2006 :: “Really? Clowns?”

This Saturday was 24 Hour Comics Day. This was my first attempt at a comic this lengthy, let alone in this short of a time span, but I actually finished it, in under 21 hours even! Click the cover image below to view it as a PDF. (WARNING: Contains harsh language bunnies.)

October 6th, 2006 :: “DTDs”

I’ve said this before, but I’m a strong believer that robots are genderless, and I try to keep my robots that way except where absolutely necessary. Judging by the comments I’ve received regarding the issue, I feel that a lot of people project a male gender on my ‘bots. However, due to the medium of comics, and the way that people react to dialogue and whatnot, I feel that at least for this series, my options are wide enough to include gendered robots. So, here’s a lady-looking ‘bot, enjoy.

October 5th, 2006 :: “The Robozoic Era”

This one may be my favorite of this batch so far. I also couldn’t resist adding a little color.

October 4th, 2006 :: “Get Some”

Filler.

October 3rd, 2006 :: “Bad Vibes From This One”

OK, so initially I wasn’t going to post these robots. In fact, it’s not even finished, there was a background and everything when I sketched it. The reason I DID post it was to get your response to it, but also because when I started Robot-A-Day, it was nothing but a glorified sketchblog and I promised to show the good, the bad, and the everything in between. I also started it as a way to keep me drawing every day and to improve my skills. Robots are great because I can traipse the thin line between overtly mechanical and more human-like appearances in the figures every day.

With this drawing, I inadvertently crossed that line and into the Uncanny Valley (Please read if you don’t know what this is.) and it really bothers me; so much so that as I said, I was not going to even post it. It’s making me re-think what makes my robots even all that “robotic” anymore. I don’t know if it’s the figure drawing I’m getting in school now, or if it’s a fluke, or what, but this drawing (which I doodled during art history class and inked later) literally makes me feel repulsed and sick to my stomach when I look at it for too long. Who’d have thunk it that my little drawings would actually cross over into real life robot theory?

All that being said, this last week or so has been the first period in a long time that I’m truly happy with the way the site is progressing. I’m really proud that in one month, I will have been doing this whole robot thing for a year, and I don’t forsee stopping it at this point. If you’ve been putting off telling those robot-loving friends about the R-A-D, it’d mean a lot to me if you’d take the time to spread the word this week.

Thanks for reading all of this,
BT
