Spokane Comicon 07 Review

A few members of the RCC, including yours truly, travelled up to Spokane, Washington for the inagural Spokane Comicon. We had a great time and got to introduce more folks than we expected to the RCC. Big thanks go to Nathan O’Brien, the coordinator, for doing an awesome job putting the whole show together. We definitely plan on heading back next year, although I personally would like to see a few more creators show up to sell their stuff, as opposed to the larger amount of comic and collectible vendors that were also at the show. Here are some pictures!

We also debuted two books at the Spokane show: Creation, our 48-page anthology, the RCC’s first group release. It features a story from each of the collective’s 11 founding members. We are already down to only three two one copy left of the first run, a limited edition (25) version with a 3-color, hand-pulled, screen printed cover. If you happen to be in the Portland, Oregon metro area, copies are also available at Reading Frenzy, Floating World Comics, and Karen’s Comics. A larger, non-screened run will be produced upon the sale of the first edition. The other book is Maddison Bond’s The Occult Collection, a 12-page illustrated book that follows the adventures of a nameless protagonist through an H.P. Lovecraft inspired world. Both books are currently available in the RCC Store.

Shoes and Ukes

I’m about to take off to Spokane for Saturday’s Spokane Comicon, but I thought I’d post once more before I go. This is a painting of a pair of my shoes that I did this last semester for my Beginning Painting class. This is the only painting I was happy with the entire semester of oil painting. It is also most likely the ONLY oil painting of mine that I will EVER be happy with as I found out that I am very allergic to oil paint and don’t plan on using it ever again.

For my one summer math class, we are learning the math behind music theory and sound. For our big project, we are building a cigar box ukelele. Here’s mine in progress. I took it home this weekend so I could throw some wood stain on it. I still need to cut the fretboard and attach it and the bridge, put some tuning pegs on it and it will be ready to be strung! I plan on sitting in my hammock and playing this baby all summer long.

ARCHIVE

I don’t even want to say how long it took to ink all that candy.

I told some people that I would have The Life and Times of Baby Otto Zeplin: Volume One out this Thursday, but of course I’m only half way done now because I am incapable of meeting any comic deadline that I speak of publicly. I did, however, make some 12-page BOZ: Volume .5 minis that I will be bringing to the inaugural Spokane Comicon in Spokane, Washington this Saturday. I figured it was a good idea to take what I have and start spreading the word around. From now on, no spoken deadlines for comics, so let’s just say Volume One will be out “soon.”

What a great mail day!
I love mail (who doesn’t), but today was a doozie!
From left to right:
- A shirt that I designed for the MONDO Jugglefest a while ago. MONDO is an annual juggling and unicycling festival in Minnesota. I’ve been waiting for it to arrive to post it here.
- Comics from Jessica McLeod and Edward J. Grug III of Monster and Robot Industries. Go buy some Monster and Robot comics if you haven’t already, or even if you have. You won’t regret it.
- A FREE puzzle from Veer! I signed up to use Veer for some photo reference once and they just keep sending me free stuff. I love them.

I finished classes a week ago and have done a whole lot of sitting on my ass, and not drawing, since. That’ll change soon, but it was quite the nice break.

I think it’s sort of neat that I’m posting this Baby Otto page 107 years, to the day, after it “actually happened;” funny how that works out.

Lastly, the Life and Times of Baby Otto Zeplin archives are now on Webcomics Nation as well. I’ll be loading up a few more things there as I find the time.

Look Who’s Back!

So it’s been a long, hard battle for me to get started on the life of Baby Otto Zeplin again, but here we are, finally. I have set a goal for myself to have Volume One (aka days 1-25) completed before the end of May. It will be the first of ten volumes that will be released sporadically over the next few years most likely. This is a long term project in its truest sense for me. I hope you enjoy it.

If you are new to the whole BOZ concept, CLICK HERE FIRST!. I’ll be working on a better archiving system for these at some point soon.
