Go USA!

This’ll be my last post until I get back from England at the end of the month. I’m going to be in the group show at the Grass Hut Gallery in July. This is a preliminary gouache sketch for one of the three pieces I’m doing for the show, so I thought I’d show it. I’ll post the finished pieces in July.

See you in a few weeks!

Help Me Beautify My Studio! (+ travel news)

I finally got my new studio space in order, but I think I need some more people’s art represented on my walls, so here’s the news and my request:

I want to trade art with you!

I’m about to leave on a two-week trip to England for a wedding. I won’t be posting anything during that time, but while I’m gone, I’m going to make some little postcard art pieces while on trains and the like; mostly ink drawings, maybe some collage too. I think it would be awesome to come back from England to a bunch of cool art. So, send me some sort of small, cool, original piece of art during the next two weeks, and when I get back I’ll mail you one of the pieces I made while on my trip. Sounds good, right?! (Don’t forget to include your return address somewhere)

Big (Time) Weekend!

Friday night was the opening reception for Connected at Skeleton Key Tattoo (1729 SE Hawthorne, in case you’re in Portland and want to stop by, up all month!). I couldn’t nail into the walls, so I built these big panels to hang everything easily. I forgot to take pictures during the opening, but a bunch of people showed up, a few of them bought things, and the DJ was playing some AMAZING tunes; all in all a very fun night.

Close up of my prints and other miscellany.

Close up of Connected.

Then on Saturday, two other members of the RCC and I headed north for the Olympia Comics Festival.

It was held in a small club called The Vault, and there was a band, Google Maps, and they played early on during the show.

And then some people showed up.

And some of them were slightly blurry.

And there’s Blue at the Portland Zine Symposium table!

And hey, there’s Jeffry Brown, talking about stuff!

That’s The Way

Here’s the second new screenprint that I’ll be debuting tomorrow at the opening of Connected. Each two-color print in the limited edition of 26 was hand-pulled onto a 8.75″ by 18″ piece of 120 lb. paper. These will be available for purchase after my show.

As a last reminder for those of you in the Portland area: the opening reception for Connected is tomorrow night, Friday, June 6th at Skeleton Key Tattoo (1729 SE Hawthorne). The show kicks off at 7pm, and I’d love to see you there.

Unintentional Lincoln Heads

Along with the 34 pieces that make up Connected (see previous post), I’ve printed two new screenprints based on two of my favorite pieces from the show. Each two-color print in the limited edition of 50 was hand-pulled onto a 6″ by 18″ piece of 120 lb. paper. These will be available for purchase after my show. Check back tomorrow for the second print.

So Much News!

June is going to be a big month for me it seems. First off, I’ll be having my first solo show since January 2007. I finished the centerpiece of the show a few days ago, but I’ll be showing other paintings and prints as well. It will be up all month at Skeleton Key Tattoo in Portland (1729 SE Hawthorne), but the opening reception is First Friday, June 6th at 7pm. There’ll be beer, wine, a DJ, and of course art, so come and check it out if you happen to be in the area.

Connected is my big show, of course, but I also happen to be in three other shows this month as well! My Beans print will be part of the “Beans & Screens” show, opening June 5th at Mugshots Coffeehouse in Philadelphia, PA. Also on June 5th, Portland’s First Thursday, I will have some work up at Tender Loving Empire (for the second month in a row) as part of their “Small Deal” show, featuring small and cheap art from many amazing artists. Check out the postcard below, it’s the first group show I’ve taken part in where my name got mentioned on the card, how exciting! Finally, Portland City Hall is having a postcard art show called “Towards Carfree Cities” on the 17th. I sent them some anonymous postcard art quite a while ago so I’m assuming they received it and I will be in the show.

And this is the new art studio I got to move into on Friday! It’s a very long story, but I have been without a specific studio to work in for almost six months right now. I’m sharing it with three other artists, Les McClaine, Jon Siruno, and Maya West. The desk and shelf in the back corner is my quarter of the space. Obviously I still need to set everything up and make it pretty before I can get any good work done, but let me tell you, it feels so good to be back to work in a space that is not my kitchen or bedroom.
