I was invited to take part in a group art show at Tender Loving Empire in June. Participants could do whatever they pleased, with the only stipulation being that the piece must involve a 40oz. beer bottle. I’ve had this old boxing trophy topper for YEARS now and I’ve always wanted to do something with it, and this show was finally worthy of its use. So, after “emptying” the 40, I went to work. I actually have another matching boxing trophy topper, and was hoping to get the time to do a second bottle, but that didn’t happen, so it’ll get saved for something special later.

It’s acrylic, ink, and gold and silver leaf. If you look closely, you can see that I’ve even gold leafed the boxer’s gloves and trunks for that extra touch. I’ve been WAY into metal leafing stuff lately, so prepare yourself to see a lot more of that soon; I have a show I’m preparing for in July that will involve a lot of gold.

I was in two different shows that opened in Portland on Thursday last week. First off, Tender Loving Empire was having a show called “Wish You Were Here,” in which all pieces had to be mailed to the gallery. Pieces were hung as they were posted, no packaging or protection, stamps and all. I didn’t get a piece mailed in, but they did let me paint the canceled stamp title on that wall in the background, which was so fun to do, and the first wall I had painted on in about 10 years. They had a really fun, packed opening too, as usual.

And, Man’s Face Stuff made it’s second debut at the Make show at Wieden+Kennedy an advertising firm here in Portland. They have offices all over the world and anyone who works for them could donate a piece to be in the show. My wax-making partner works there, so we donated some wax, and it sold, as you can see by the red pin. All sales went to help out Room to Read. Moustache wax for charity!

I was in the studio late last night, and was taking some pictures for something else, so I thought I’d grab a shot of my chunk of our studio, Tranquility Base, in its current state of affairs.
