No Hurries, No Worries

The good people over at Letter Cult have listed my “No Hurries, No Worries” print from earlier this year as one of their Best of the First Half of 2009, alongside many other amazing examples of hand-lettered and custom typography. I’ve been working a lot on my lettering for the last year now, and I’m really proud that something I made got picked to be shown alongside the work of people who inspired me to get better in the first place.
I still have some copies of this print left, if you’re interested, they are for sale right here.
BT At 100!

One of my LiveJournal friends, Phil McAndrew is having a contest; the entrance fee being a drawing of yourself at the age of 100. Here’s my entry: me, stumbling around on my replacement knees, still fiddling around with the banjo with my arthritic hands.
Risin’ Waters

I really hope this isn’t a trend in my life…
Some of you long time readers may remember that almost exactly a year ago, my studiomates and I were forced to move into a new studio because our previous studio building decided to go ahead with a new roof install during a rainstorm and our studio got flooded.
Well guess what, folks, it happened again; the same exact thing in a different building! Roofers were working all last week on the roof above our current studio. A few days ago, it started raining, and the tarps they installed to cover the holes in the roof were not nearly adequate to stop even a night’s worth of moderate rainfall. The water just came right through the ceiling and kept coming long after it stopped raining. Last time we got flooded out of our studio, we didn’t actually see any damage to any of our personal belongings; this time we were not so lucky.
I’ll make a conservative estimate and say I lost around $500 in books, paper and art supplies, and I got off easy compared to some of my studiomates. Luckily, all my original comic pages and illustration originals were in a raised filing cabinet and stayed dry.

This last shot is my 5-gallon trash can, completely filled to the top with water. I didn’t find this out until I pushed the top down to make more room and up gushed a brown torrent.

I hate this, I would prefer this never happens again.
Come Aboard, We’re Expecting You!

This illustration of mine is appearing in this week’s “Queer Issue” of the Portland Mercury. Read the article here if you wish.
Also, yesterday I organized a bunch of my PNCA illustration chums for a little summer drawing session in the park. It was the first time we’ve done something like this and I was surprised that over ten people showed up, as I was kind of expecting around four, so hopefully we’ll do it again soon. Here are two drawings I did of Kevin M. Arnold and WC Williams, two friends that showed up.

And we did some jam comics too, here’s one right here!

Mmm, Coffee! / More Coffee!

Hey, so I feel like I’ve been really bad at the internet lately, sorry folks. Another thing I haven’t done much of lately is screenprint, pretty much nothing since I let the Weekly Print slip away from me a few months ago. I needed a break, but things have changed, friends! I printed this for the second Beans and Screens art show, which will take place at the Green Line Cafe in Philadelphia on June 26th. I was in the show last year too, when I did this piece.
It’s 9″ by 12″, and is three colors on heavy, white paper. It’ll be up for sale somewhere soon; if anyone’s interested, let me know now.
I’ll throw out another reminder later this month for you Philly friends who may want to go to the opening in my stead.
