RCC First Thursday Show

If you live in the Portland area, make sure you come down to Floating World Comics on First Thursday, August 6th. The RCC and Teenage Dinosaur Comics will be having a small press comics showcase there. It will also be the book release party for our new coloring book, Operation: R.O.B.O. Rescue.

See you there!

Also, FADGE books are now for sale! Thanks to those of you who bought a copy yesterday.

Mental Health Court

Hey, here’s another illustration I got to do for the Portland Mercury. That doctor height sign creeps me out a little, but in a good way.

Aaaaaand, here’s a little sneak preview of the book of fadges I made reference to last week. 102 pages with a screenprinted cover. Who has access to a perfect binder now? I do, I do! I think it’s going to take my book-making abilities to the next level, and that excites me tremendously. For the curious, BYP-001 means something pretty rad too, but that’ll have to wait a week or so.

EDIT: I don’t have the full edition printed yet, but they are now for sale in the RADROBOT.ORG store! Each book in the first edition of 100 will come with an original Fadge doodle from the book.

New Portland Mercury Illo

A pretty straightforward illustration for a recent Portland Mercury article about gender-based earning inequality.

MFNW Poster

Even though the show isn’t until mid-September, I guess I may as well post this now. I got asked by the good folks at Tender Loving Empire to design the poster for their Musicfest NW showcase. Musicfest NW is an annual, multiple day, multiple venue music festival in Portland. It seems strange to think, for some reason, but this is actually my first foray into the world of gigposters.

I have not seen Blue Horns or Yeah Great Fine yet, but Finn Riggins, Church, and Gratitillium are all good in my book; it was a pleasure to get to do a poster for bands I enjoy.

I’m also screenprinting an edition of these. More on that later.

Fadges, Yet Again

Fadges, fadges, and more fadges! I have now done over 100 of these in the last few weeks, and I’m itchin’ to make a book out of them.

The book will be smallish in size, probably 4 inches square, but will only have one fadge per page, so will be 100+ pages when you include title page, contact info, etc; and it will be perfect bound. I’m thinking of making the first edition limited to 100 books, screenprinted covers, of course, AND each book in the first edition will include one of the original fadges.

The questions for you, dear reader…
For those of you who also make books, what would you charge for a book like this?

And for those of you who buy books, what might you expect to pay for a book like this?

More Fadges

I’m a pretty big fan of Rockasaurus.

Shameless Begging: Times are rough out there these days, the freelance illustration market has been pretty dang slow for me lately. After a long hiatus, and in an effort to stave off apartment eviction, I finally relaunched the radrobot.org STORE! Now, and for the first time ever, you can find my comics, prints, original works, and yes, even moustache wax for sale in the same spot. Please take a look, and if you are in a position to buy, every little bit would help; thanks much. RAD STORE!

Lots of Stuff Today

First off, something a little different and more serious than I usually get to do. This illustration is appearing in this week’s Portland Mercury, alongside an article about the recent settlement in the case of a mentally ill man who was tasered and beaten to death by the Portland police three years ago. I thought a rough pencil portrait would look better in the negative, as opposed to my usual, clean ink line.

I’ve done a bunch more of these little ink splotch doodles that I posted about a few days ago; 53 in the last three days to be exact. I’ve taken to calling them fadges because it’s a word I doodled in the same manner a while back, and it sounds interesting (and just kind of dirty enough) to catch the eye and the ear. I think I’m going to put together a little zine of these, maybe when I reach 100+. Hats, or things wearing hats, seems to be a repeating theme in many of these that I’ve done so far.

Lastly, I just found this picture on Flickr of me looking like the coolest dude on the planet. This is from a photo taken by Sam Guerrero, curator at Tender Loving Empire, and was taken during the opening of my You Better Believe It show opening last Thursday night.

You Better Believe It Test Prints

As part of my show at Tender Loving Empire this month, I showed four customized test prints. Whenever I screenprint, I always pull a few initial prints onto some scrap paper, and eventually these scraps pile up with layers and layers of beautiful ink. Sometimes, these layers create an interesting image on their own, but I had a few that just didn’t seem like they were going anywhere special, so I added some liquid gold leaf and ink, and there you have it.

The other two can be seen on my Flickr page.

And, here’s some ink splotch doodles I did yesterday. I’ve been watching a lot of Sifl & Olly lately, so there’s a weird lookin’ Chester too.

You Better Believe It

Yesterday, I was part of four artist show at Tender Loving Empire. Along with a few prints from the Weekly Print earlier this year, I showed some customized test prints (more on those on Monday), but TLE also let me paint the title of the show on their wall. I probably could have had more pieces in the show had I not painted the title so large, oh well.

This is the second time I’ve been able to paint the wall at TLE, and I think it needs to happen more, and not just there. Big lettering is so fun!

RCC Coloring Book Coming Soon!

My group, the Robopocalypse Comics Collective, will be releasing our next group book in late July; it’s going to be a coloring book! Each member created 2-3 pages of the 26 page story, which was written by Terry Blas. The book will tell the tale of three kids and their victory over some robots gone bad.

I was bored at my studio last week, so I decided to color one of my three pages. This will be the second page in the book, when the robots are still friendly, and helping to rebuild society after a regular apocalypse.

More info as the release date nears, we’re even having a release party/art show for it in early August!

PORTLANDERS: First Thursday Show!
If you’re in the Portland area, I will be showing my work, this First Thursday, July 2nd, as part of a four-person show at Tender Loving Empire. I’ll be showing a bunch of prints, and test prints, and there’ll be snacks, and two bands, you should totally show up!
