Typo Friday #7: Ryan Heshka’s ABC Spookshow

In honor of Halloween being tomorrow and all, I thought this week’s Typo Friday should have a spooky flair to it, so I present to you Ryan Heshka’s ABC Spookshow, one of my favorite alphabet books. I bought it a few years ago and I just keep coming back to it time and time again for a fun and quick read.

Heshka does a wonderful job of mixing his retro-esque, painted illustration style with both painted and collaged type throughout the book. Each page of the book is very engaging. Here are a few of my favorite pages:

ABC Spookshow is available for a very reasonable price on Amazon.

And of course you should check out more of Ryan Heshka’s work at his website, www.ryanheshka.com

I’m working on an alphabet book for my thesis, which I made reference to on Wednesday, so I’m looking for more alphabet books for research, both those geared towards children and not. Anyone have any favorites?

“Kill” Shark Shirts Now Available

There was a bit of interest for these t-shirts at APE the other week, but I finally put them up for sale through my Etsy store.

Available in sizes small-XL for only $15 on Etsy!

My OTHER Studio

Because I’m a senior this year, I have access to cheap studio space through my school. I opted to take it so I could work on some large panels for an upcoming show. Most spaces in the studio building at PNCA are essentially large cubicles, but I am in a larger space shared by four other people and no walls to separate us, which I like a lot better.

Last night, however, I felt the place looked a little too stark and white, so I decided to work on my walls a bit instead. My space is right by the front door of the studio building, so everyone will see this as they leave. There’s also an upper floor that looks down into my space; hopefully they like it. I know for sure it has already tricked a few folks into actually looking up to the ceiling.

Speaking of being a senior… that means I’m also working on my final thesis project. I haven’t brought it up here yet, but you’ll be seeing a lot in the coming months. I can say this right now: it involves a personal exploration of facial hair, which may sound funny at first, but for any of you that actually know me, you realize it’s a topic I take very seriously.

But, I’m showing you this awful Photobooth picture for a reason (not just to show off my sweet new glasses). I was issued a challenge, sort of. I will propose my thesis idea to a panel of teachers this December, and will give the final presentation of the work almost exactly six months from today. Due to the theme of my project, my thesis instructor informed me yesterday that I cannot shave for the next six months, but then have to show up with something spectacular for my presentation. That’s my kind of challenge, and hey, if it’s good enough for Alec Longstreth, it’s good enough for me. Unlike Alec though, I will not be completely shaven down at the start; I’m keeping the ’stache cause it’s hard to sell moustache wax without it.

Typo Friday #6: Found Letters

Welcome back to Typo Friday, friends! I went out to the Bins again a few days ago, and even though they raised their price on hardcover books, I was of course, convinced to pick up a handful of goodies such as this music education book with its super bright dust jacket.

The cloth cover itself is no less pleasing. There’s something I really like about the awkward alignment of the type.

Nothing too impressive with the type, but a great cover overall.

This is the real find of my trip. This was just a completely unexpected, stellar find.

No type at all on this cover of Elephant Bill, but I though this elephant line drawing was rad.

This one was just the covers, all the innards having already been removed. I’ve already bound up some heavy drawing paper and turned it into a sketchbook for future use. Which brings up a topic on which I’d like some opinions. The internet and artsy, handmade boutiques and such are full of people who have torn apart old books to turn into sketchbooks and journals and the like. I never really know how to feel; there’s that part of me that feels like there’s something sacred about these books, as relics of another time, but now having collected a wealth of them myself, I realize that most will not be read beyond a cursory skimming, and most of what I have is not worth anything to be resold as either a collectible or serving their original purpose.

My question is: is it better to re-purpose what parts I can of these gems that I can for more modern use, as many others do without thought, or the other option, which may eventually lead back to the Goodwill and into the hands of someone in the same position?

Where’s Lulu? Web Header

The image above is only part of a website header I was commissioned to illustrate by Where’s Lulu?, a user-updated website that promotes accessibility options for people of all disabilities at shops, bars, and restaurants around Portland, Oregon. They needed an image that was fun, filled with people, and instantly recognizable as Portland to those who live here.

Please check out their site to see the rest of the header image and to learn more about what they are trying to do. Last I heard, they are planning to expand into other major cities such as San Francisco soon.

BONUS: Here’s a little sneak peek sketch of something I’m working on this week.

Back From APE!

I got back from the Alternative Press Expo late Sunday night/early Monday morning. I spent the weekend in the clouds as it were; on the left, there was Vancouver BC’s Cloudscape Comics collective, manned by Jeff Ellis and Jonathon Dalton, and to the right the brothers Dayton, Brandon(not pictured) and Damien of Whistling Cloud.

Here’s my table setup on the second day. People really dug my new blank journals with my old screenprints as covers. I only came home with a few of those, so I’ll have to make more, and they’ll be up in the store soon too.

I also brought more prints than I usually bring to shows, which is good because they were a big seller for me. It sounds weird to say it, but I feel like I could go back to APE next year, and not bring any comics at all, but just fill my table with printed matter and stationery goods and do just fine - if not better - because there would be more of a focus to my table. Between comics, t-shirts, prints, to-do lists, journals, buttons, and moustache wax, I felt like some people were a little confused as to what exactly they should be looking for from my table.

This woman came by on Sunday fully decked out in Mighty Boosh merch, most of it homemade. I demanded to take a picture of her homemade Boosh bracelets, featuring even minor characters! There’s a shot of her other wrist on my Flickr.

Highlights of the weekend: Green Monk by table neighbor Brandon Dayton, Wuvable Oaf #1 and the Wuvable Oaf Kitty Undies t-shirt from Ed Luce, and Tiger Bee by Katy Wu.

Also, KRK Ryden bought the last copy of Baby Otto Volume 1 that I brought, which was cool; it was his last purchase of the show!

I got a ton of compliments on my moustache (many from women with their boyfriend/husband, who had to turn around as they were walking away to secretly mouth their approval at my stache!). San Francisco is an amazing city, but way too clean-shaven for my tastes. A message to the heterosexual men of San Francisco: grow some facial hair, it’ll do you some good!

Shark T Shirts

A big thanks to everyone that voted in yesterday’s poll. Even though a majority of you said you liked the one color design as much, if not more, than the two color, I decide to challenge myself and print the two.

Since I don’t have an actual multi-color t-shirt press, I used the same registration method I use for paper, which is much less exact on t-shirts, but I think the slightly off-register look kinda works for this design. The one in the photo is pretty representative of the average level of off-register.

I’ll put these in the store after I get back from the Alternative Press Expo on Monday, but if you absolutely must have one now, if you Paypal me $16 (shipping included) to bigtime@robopocalypse.com before 8pm (PST) Thursday, I will save one for you and ship it once I get back. I have 2-3 shirts in each size from small to XL. Be sure to tell me what size you need. They are printed on heavyweight Gildan tees, which run larger than say an American Apparel.

It’s a pretty small run, so if these prove to be popular, I’ll probably reprint them, with a few one color versions too, the next time I order blank shirts.

Speaking of APE, if you’re going to find yourself there this weekend, make sure to swing by table 202, where I’ll have comics, prints, t-shirts, buttons, to-do lists, journals, and whatever else I can cram in my bag and still fit on an airplane. Say hey!

There will be no Typo Friday tomorrow because I will be on my way to San Francisco.

New T-Shirt Poll!

I’m preparing to head to San Francisco for the Alternative Press Expo (Table #202) this weekend, and the last thing I want to get ready are a new batch of t-shirts. So, it’s poll time! For the purposes of this poll, let’s just say that everyone reading this right now would definitely buy the shirt above with the two-color shark design… With me so far? Good.

I came upon this one color version when I accidentally turned off the blue layer in Photoshop and really liked the way it looked, so I want to know what you think; if you were willing to buy the two-color shirt, would you be just as interested in this one color version instead?

I’m curious because obviously the one color version would save me a lot of time if it’s just as cool. Even if you would never be caught dead wearing this shirt, vote as though it were something you would wear; I’m just looking for an answer to the one color or two decision.

Would You Buy the One Color Shark Instead of the Two Color?

Perfect-Bound Journals +New Prints For Sale!

I’ve been busy making perfect-bound journals at the IPRC for the Center to sell at Wordstock this last weekend. I pulled out some old screenprinted off-prints and test-prints and used them for covers. I also found a free, airline safety manual, which made three cool covers as well.

These journals, however, will be for sale at my table at the Alternative Press Expo in San Francisco on October 17-18. The larger heart journals are filled with heavy, drawing paper, while the rest are a mix of different text weight papers, great for writing. All are perfect bound with a screenprinted cover, and most have rounded corners. If anyone here wants one, I’m thinking $3 for a small journal, and $5 for a larger one, plus like $2.50 for shipping.

There’s also a small journal with my “Mmm, Bacon” pig on the cover, but it has a slightly mangled corner on the cover. The first person to feel so inclined as to buy something from the store will get that journal for free. It’s still totally usable, it just ain’t as pretty as the rest.

I finally updated my Imagekind Gallery, after over a year with only my “Drink Friendly!” image in it. I’ve ordered a few prints through Imagekind and the quality is very good. You can choose what paper you’d like, and from quite a few different print sizes. They’ll even frame it for you if that’s what you’re into! For now, any of the five images above can be purchased for as low as $12.81!

Typo Friday #5 - How To Win Friends and Influence People

Today’s Typo Friday also happens to be my current illustration class assignment. The assignment was to re-illustrate the cover of a book on the New York Times Bestseller List. I took it in my own direction and chose to create a cover for one of my favorite books of all time, Dale Carnegie’s How to Win Friends and Influence People. The problem as I see it is that the book gets categorized as a self-help book, and thus, gets boring, self-help book cover design. But this book is so much more than your average, modern self-help book.

I wanted to make a cover that would appeal to a newer, younger generation of readers that may be able to make some positive steps by reading this book. Since first reading How to Win Friends and Influence People, and applying some of its teachings in my interactions with clients and customers as a freelancer and behind the table at comic shows, I’ve noticed a marked difference in how I act, how others react to me, and how well I sell.

I went through pages of sketchbook sketches, trying out different type styles for the cover, but in the end felt confident that I had written the title enough to just sort of wing it on the final illustration. The only part I really was unsure on was “Influence,” which I drew three times before happy.

Just for fun, here’s a scan of a 1959 paperback version I recently bought.

Also, as I mentioned on Wednesday, I was asked to speak about the DIY community and my experiences with Etsy before introducing Matt Stinchcomb of Etsy.com at a PNCA-sponsored event. You can go to Flickr to see the rest of the set this photo came from, but I liked this one the best because it looks like I know what I’m talking about, when in actuality, my mind was a blank the entire time I was on stage. Apparently I didn’t say anything stupid and was kind of funny at times, so that’s rad. Matt had a lot of good things to say about both the past and future of Etsy, and I happily had the opportunity to have a one-on-one meeting with him yesterday afternoon, to get some more tips on how to better use my Etsy store.
