Taking Care of Business This Friday

This Friday, I’ll be showing two big-ass paintings and a bunch of prints that I’ve created over the last year at Skeleton Key Tattoo. Show starts at 7pm if you can make it. There’ll be drinks and snacks and even a free tattoo given away as a door prize. I showed at Skeleton Key almost a year and a half ago and they invited me back for another go! Pictures of the opening next week.

I’ve been getting a little press lately too. Baby Otto #1 just got a good review by Rob Clough over at High-Low.

And Man’s Face Stuff was featured in a “beard and moustache gift guide” over at Erin Dollar’s site, I Made You A Beard. For those of you who don’t know, Erin makes beards out of felt and yarn so everyone can share in the beardly goodness, and she’s super nice, so head on over to her site and get some awesome gift ideas for the beardo-lover in your life.

And speaking of awesome gift ideas, I’m still running my 15% off discount for any purchase over $20 (not including shipping) from the radrobot.org store or from radrobot.etsy.com.

Typo Friday #11: Hoffee Font

My friend Doug Merritt recently created this wonderful typeface, which he calls “Hoffee,” inspired by Portland’s two favorite beverages, coffee and beer. Doug painstakingly arranged roasted coffee beans and hops leaves into letterforms and photographed the results; no Photoshoppery here! I was incredibly impressed when Doug showed me this last week and I knew I had to feature here on Typo Friday. I love the little touches like the single leaf as the dot on the i and j, and how some of the leaves still have some of the vine attached. The whole set just has such great character. Drink up and enjoy!

Slow Day, But T-Shirts Are RAD!

I’ve been super busy with end of semester school work as well as getting ready for an upcoming art show, but nothing’s really in a state to show these days. Luckily, these “Make Music” shirts I designed for Tender Loving Empire are finally for sale online. One of the models is actually a friend of mine and she had no idea it was even my shirt until she saw it for sale, weird how that works out. Plus, check out that rugged redbeard on the other model. TLE sure knows how to pick ‘em.

They only list size large for sale on Etsy, but they have other sizes, just ask.

Also, for you book binding geeks out there: my trusty bone folder finally entered retirement after being slowly chipped away from going over stapled comic spines time and time again, so I ended up buying a horn folder, as in made of horn not bone. I hadn’t heard of them before, but they are supposedly stronger than bone. It does the job, and is more badass due to being carved from a black horn. My books will be 14% more evil now.

Casual Alphabet Book Project

I’m working on a very big alphabet book-style project for my senior thesis at PNCA. That won’t be done until May 2010 when I graduate. To get in the swing of things, I’m doing some quick black and white alphabet illustrations whenever I find the time. Mostly inspired by things I like, iconic things in my head, etc; glorified doodles pretty much. If I like them when I’m done I may bind them into a little zine perhaps. Here are the first two to get started.

Typo Friday #10: Keep Your Eyes On Your Own Paper

For this week’s Typo Friday, I thought I’d show you the next piece in my “rules to live by” book which I started posting on Monday. I had a good time trying to recreate the look of ballpoint on faded notebook paper, using no actual notebook paper and only grayscale scans of some ballpoint scratches; otherwise it’s finished the same way I do all my illustration work.

I turned one ballpoint scribble into a brush in Photoshop, and while doing some experimenting, came upon a custom brush setting that makes a really wonderful, soft, crosshatching effect that I will almost definitely use for something soon.

I wasn’t sure how much I liked the doodled version right away, so I made another “clean” version without the doodles. It also just so happens to be available as a high quality print in my Etsy store.

I also just added a Fan Page for my art and comics and such on the Facebook. Feel free to become a fan, if you’re into that sort of thing.

Cash Is King!

I believe I showed the start of this panel a month or so ago, and here it is, relatively complete. I’m really happy with the lettering. It’s pretty big for me, almost 5 by 4 feet. I’ve got another panel the same size that I’m finishing up too. This will be part of a show I’m having in December; more info on that soon.

Yes, the drippy dollar signs are gold leaf.

Gotta Do What You Gotta Do Biker

This image of a biker rockin’ through the desert was created as an illustration class assignment to create an image for self-promotional materials. I’m thinking of things on a little grander scale than just this single image though; my plan is to illustrate my “rules to live by” I guess. This is the first of eight to ten illustrations that will be printed and bound together as a promotional portfolio book.

Each illustration will cover a phrase that I use often, such as “Gotta do what you gotta do,” or some other phrase that describes a personal standard by which I live my life. Each will have the phrase itself integrated into the illustration.

I will have two more completed before the end of my semester in December, and hope to finish the rest over my winter break between semesters. More as I complete them, of course.

In Man’s Face Stuff news, we just released our first, limited edition scent, just in time for winter. It’s called “Seasoned Greetings” and is scented with Peru balsam and clove, with just a touch of actual ground cinnamon mixed in to every tin. It’s like having a hot cup of mulled cider and a gingerbread cookie under your nose all day, so good. It’s limited to a very small batch of 30 tins and is available for only $12 in the Man’s Face Stuff Etsy shop.

Typo Friday #9 - IPRC Letterpress Poster

Most of the letters I post on Typo Friday will be of the hand-drawn variety, but in the last week I’ve taken two letterpress classes at the IPRC, and I’m sort of in love with setting metal type, so I thought I’d show you what we came up with during the Intro to the Poster Press class last night. The teacher, Michael d’Alessandro set and printed the green, wooden type while showing us how to use the table top poster press. Then, each student got to set a small chunk of text and/or imagetype and that was locked into the press bed and everyone got a go inking up and rolling the paper over.

I did the eagle, ZAP, and stars, as if you couldn’t guess, so here’s a close-up.

Remember: 15% discount on orders of $20+ (before shipping) from the radrobot.org store or my Etsy shop.

The Perfect Snowman

Snowman with a moustache
An illustration for greeting cards that will be sent out with every order of Man’s Face Stuff moustache wax throughout the next month. It also coincides with the release of our first, limited edition, seasonal scent, “Seasoned Greetings,” which is scented with balsam, clove, and real cinnamon. It’s like having a hot cup of mulled cider and a gingerbread cookie under your nose all day. It’s limited to a small batch of only 30 hand-numbered tins and will be for sale here before the end of the week.

15% OFF PROMO: The holiday seasons are coming up and I would like to remind everyone to please think about supporting independent artists and craftspeople when you are doing your gift giving this year. It’s not the easiest or most financially feasible thing in the world to make a living selling your own work. Now is the perfect time to not only support a community of people busting their ass to make something beautiful, but also to give as a gift something that actually has some soul and craft behind it, as opposed to some mass-produced piece of nothing. So, in order to give you even more encouragement, until Thursday, December 10th, all purchases of $20 or more (not including shipping) from either the radrobot.org store or my Etsy shop (which has my t-shirts), will receive a 15% discount! The discount will come in the form of a Paypal refund after the order is completed.

I will be adding some of the blank, perfect-bound journals I’ve been making to Etsy later this week, and some screenprinted, 2010 calendars the week after that, in case you’re not quite ready to buy today. And here are some of my favorite items I have found on Etsy lately; I’m sure their creators could all use a little love as well. Pass the word along!

Letterpress Love

After years and years of learning various forms of printmaking, I finally took a letterpress class at the Independent Publishing Resource Center on Thursday. I am, of course, completely enamored with the letterpress process already, and will be taking another IPRC class in letterpress poster printing later this week. There’s something about having a century-old hunk of cast iron under your control that just feels so much more heartwarming than say dragging a squeegee across a screen, not that I don’t still adore screenprinting. Anyways, everyone in class got to typeset and print a small saying and/or image, and here is mine. They are about the size of business cards in real life, printed in reflex blue on gold and recycled brown cardstock. Fun fun fun.

I’ve been working at a personal goal to fill my Etsy shop with 50 items before the end of November and promote it more to see if I can increase my views and sales, and it is paying off. I’m up to 48 items already and my Whoa Dang! t-shirt was featured on Alexander’s Designs blog this week. Go check it out and remember to support your local independent artists!

Also, check out this video. If you haven’t seen it, it’s a stop motion mural animation by Mike Nowland and Carson Ting, but what’s super rad is what happens right around 1:10. That dude totally looks familiar.
