2010 Calendars, Finally!

Better almost late than never I suppose. I have had it in my head to make a tearaway shop-style calendar since I started working with the perfect binder at the IPRC, and on this the last day of 2009, here they are for 2010.

And now some process!

The base image of this dapper ghosty is a three-color screenprint on heavy cover stock. Also printed were some guides to help in calendar and hanging placement.

Now glue on the calendar part that you’ve had printed and bound for months as you’ve procrastinated on the rest of the project!

Stick ‘em all under your heaviest, most awesome book. Wait.

You’ve got calendars! You’ll notice I also put brass grommets on for hanging, instead of just punching a hole through the top. This should help it last all the way throughout the next year.

If you or someone you know needs to be reminded to be a little more dapper everyday, these are available in my Etsy shop.

Courier Coffee Shirts

After a few months off, I’ve been screenprinting quite a bit this last week, the results of which I’ll be showing most of soon, but to kick things off, my buddy Michael Parich and I screened these shirts for our mutual friend Joel Domreis, who runs Courier Coffee Roasters, and roasts some of the best coffee you’ve ever tasted, and if you’re in Portland, will deliver it by bike. The design is from the stamp that Joel designed and stamps on every bag of coffee he sends out.

To Counterfeit Is Death

Just playing around with a phrase that’s been running through my head lately. I watched a biography of Ben Franklin a few weeks ago and it informed me that on the earliest paper money in Philadelphia, which Ben Franklin printed himself, the phrase “to counterfeit is death” appeared. (See below) He also made copper plates of actual leaves and their unique vein structure as another deterrent to would-be counterfeiters.

Typo Friday #12: Repainting a Ghost Sign

For the entire time I have lived in Portland, this building in my neighborhood, once a convenience store, had been in great exterior disrepair; this included the ghost image of the sign for what was most likely the original tenant of the building, dated 1891. A few months ago, I noticed workers preparing to repaint the exterior of the building, and I was worried because it’s on a much-used bike route of mine and seeing even the remnants of old, hand-painted signs always warms my heart. Much to my surprise, when they repainted the rest of the building, they repainted the original signage as well!

I had never seen that done before, and certainly would not have assumed they would do it with such a basic sign like this one, but it made me happy and I thought it deserving to be part of Typo Friday this week. Has anyone else seen an old sign get repainted when the new tenants refurbish the space?

Crafty Wonderment!

Man’s Face Stuff took part in our first official show on Sunday, Crafty Wonderland, at the Portland Convention Center. There were somewhere around like 300 vendors, all selling their homemade wares. 7,500+ attendees showed up during the eight hours of the show, and we, and our giant moustache, were situated only a few tables away from the entrance doors; prime real estate. We split a booth with Dane, a friend and chocolatier who happens to make chocolate moustaches on a stick, amongst other delectable delights, so our tables went quite well together. Dane’s website is www.pinkwhitebrown.com.

But BT, what’s that sign look like from the other side?

How about that friendly face? You’d be hard pressed NOT to buy wax from a fella like that!

We converted an old kid’s school desk I already had as our little wax stand and it worked perfectly. Fun, fun times at Crafty Wonderland. We’re hoping to take part in the next CW show in May, this one was a blast and a half.

Crafty Wonderland

Portlanders: still looking for some perfect holiday gift ideas? Come down to the convention center today between 11am and 7pm for the Crafty Wonderland Super Colossal Holiday Sale!

My business partner and I will be be there selling moustache wax underneath the giant moustache sign, and there are something like over 250 different vendors in the show, all selling wonderful items, I’m sure.

Remember to support your local, independent craftspeople when you’re doing your final holiday shopping (no matter what city you live in), we sure appreciate it.

Get Some Cowboy Boots

Here’s another piece for my illustrated rules to live by sort of book that I’m making as part of my self-promo pack. This is the third of eight or ten. I posted the first two a week or so ago if you missed them.

The actual wording of the suggested rule is that everyone should own at least one pair of cowboy boots, but “get some cowboy boots” just has a much better ring to it.

Willamette Week Cover

Whoa, dang, it’s my first cover! I was commissioned to illustrate the cover and hand-letter the headline for this week’s issue of Willamette Week, one of Portland’s free weekly papers. It’s so exciting to see my work staring out from newspaper boxes around the city!

The article it illustrates is about Wieden + Kennedy, an international ad agency based in Portland, launching a new idea, Wieden + Kennedy Entertainment, in which they create entertainment content first and look for ways to make it worth their time and money afterward. The WKE team is currently headed up by Aaron Rose, the man who put together Beautiful Losers. That’s Aaron on the cover, illustrated as a 1950’s pitch-man, which is actually pretty easy because he wears a hat like that all the time, seriously.
