Venn Valentines

Logic nerds should get some too, right? I’ve had this Valentine’s Day card idea kicking around my head for months, and when it came down to it, they almost didn’t get made. But they did, and just in time with Valentine’s Day just over two weeks away.

These would of course be fine to give to anyone you love, even long after Valentine’s Day.

Each is printed on acid-free cardstock, is blank inside, and includes a matching envelope. Available for $5 (including shipping) by using the Paypal button below.

The Future Is In Your Hands

Each year, my school puts together a print portfolio exchange. Usually 40-some artists, students and teachers alike, take part and get together at a big potluck party to compile and exchange prints. This year’s theme is “tarot cards,” so I thought it might be fun to take the classic, one-color style of regular playing cards, and design what could be the backside of the cards in a tarot deck.

I also think it’s kind of funny because of the double meaning of the phrase “The Future is in Your Hands” being somewhat related to cards in the sense of hands of cards, but also the other meaning in reference to you making your own destiny is not really what tarot’s all about.

I won’t be printing this for another couple weeks, but I’m definitely going to make a non-exchange edition too, in case anyone is interested in one.

IPRC Mural WIP

The Independent Publishing Resource Center has recently acquired an additional room, directly across the hall from the rest of the Center. I volunteered to paint a lettered piece above the door in the new room, which will be used as an art gallery, classroom, and for perfect binding, which I supervise. I spend at least one day a week in this room, so it was important to me to be able to leave my mark on it a little bit.

It’s still a work in progress, but it’s at a nice pause point right now, so I thought I’d share.

That’s right, it’s got gold leaf! I spare nothing when it comes to the IPRC. Just a few more spots to brush away.

The gold is clean and the lettering can begin. I used a mix of latex and acrylics.

Lettering blocked in.

Outline ribbon, add shadow, erase pencils, sign, date, and we’re good! Sometime soon, I will fully finish it by lettering “Portland, Oregon” in the upper corners, but I like it where it’s at now too.

The two larger spots on either side of the door are currently being painted by the wonderful Lori D.

Mercury Illustration

Here’s an illustration for last week’s Portland Mercury. For those not from Portland, there is a restaurant downtown called Greek Cusina, and they have this giant purple octopus climbing out of their second floor corner window…

They are currently suing the city over some fire code issues. I love being able to draw fun stuff like this for money; it’s wonderful.

Typo Friday #13: Sketchbook Wordplay

This is what I do when I’m bored at lunch. Usually I just write little lists of words in series, changing a single letter as the words progress, or playing around with spelling or simple phrases, but since this wordplay was a little more fancy-looking than usual, I thought it would be appropriate for Typo Friday this week.

Getting My Sew On

I’ve been sick for most of the last two weeks so I haven’t really been posting much, but I’ve been keeping busy. I’ve been wearing western shirts almost exclusively since I was about 18, and lately I’ve been having a harder and harder time finding ones that I like that are also affordable. About six months ago, I bought myself a sewing pattern for western shirts, and this last week of sickness, snow, and cold in Portland was perfect to inspire me to make two of them!

The first shirt took way too long to make, and turned out a little wonky, but is still totally wearable.

This second one though, which is sort of flannel-y, turned out really well, and I’ve been wearing it a lot.

Because I’m a huge dork, I even made my own label for the second shirt.

I had also been meaning to organize my sewing materials for quite some time, so as a break from sewing one day, I cut up some dowels, and drilled out some old soda crate slats to make these two spool racks to hang on my wall near my sewing stuff.
