B is for Beard

How about a few more pages from my thesis book, B is for Beard? I just received the paper onto which I will be screenprinting the covers. Due to the size of the finished book (approximately 14″ wide by 7″ tall), I had to order the largest paper available (26 by 40) from my paper source, French Paper, which feels pretty great; I’ve never gotten to order that size before.

OK, now the pages…

And, the Banner Year Pre-Order is still on for those of you wishing to buy Bearfight! and B is for Beard together for $25. (For those just interested in Bearfight, check back on Friday) A big thank you to all who pre-ordered earlier this week, it’s a big help!

Bearfight Flocking Process

How about a process post about flocking? If you don’t know, flocking is made up of powdered rayon fibers, which when adhered to any object with the proper adhesive, creates a fuzzy, felt-like texture. All 77 contributing artist copies, as well as the first 200 of the run of 500 will have the “BEARFIGHT” title flocked in white.

Here’s my ever faithful screenprinting setup with my makeshift flocking box next to it. I did the first 50 covers myself as a test, but will have assistants later, so it was helpful to have the box right next to the screen.

The company through which I bought the flocking fibers also sells a water-based adhesive which has a lengthy enough working time to be able to screenprint with it just like ink.

Since only a small part of the cover was to be flocked, I used a box just large enough for half the cover. The bottom of the box is lined with wax paper, so all that extra flocking that’s piled there can be dumped out easily and placed back into the flocking applicator bottle (you can just barely see the tip of it in the lower right, it’s just a plastic squeeze bottle).

With the adhesive freshly printed, place the cover inside the box, and puff the flocking fiber over the sticky area until covered. Flip over and tap to remove excess fiber.

This is what you’re left with after tapping; still too much. The water-based adhesive can be cured in a 300 degree oven for 5 minutes, then brushed clean with a soft paint brush or towel.

The final, flocked cover. It’s very visually subtle in person, but it feels really awesome.

Hope you enjoyed the process. Now I just need to bind them and Bearfight should be up for sale by the end of the month!

For those of you who are also interested in buying my upcoming thesis book, B is for Beard, from which I’ve been posting pages this last week, I’ve set up a pre-order special for both books. It costs quite a chunk of change to put out the larger and larger books I’ve been working on lately - especially since B is for Beard is two-color offset printed - so any and all pre-orders will really help make the process a little easier, financially. Pre-orders will also include a Bearfight! button and whatever else I decide to throw in your package.

(Bearfight will be for sale separately by the end of the month, but B is for Beard will not be printed until the end of April, so any pre-ordered Bearfight copies will not ship until early May, along with B is for Beard.)

Thanks for reading so much!

B is for Beard

Two more pages from my upcoming book, B is for Beard, which will be released in late April.

I’m thinking about putting together a pre-order for a combo pack of B is for Beard and Bearfight, to be delivered in early May. Probably $20-ish for the two books and shipping.

B is for Beard

I finally got the handmade typeface done for my thesis book, so I’ve started putting together all the final images. Here are the first three. I’ve got a printer all picked out; the insides will be two-color offset, and I’ll be screenprinting my own covers and binding them myself, or course.

Each image here is one page, and the finished page size will be roughly 14 by 7 inches, so when held open, the book will have an impressive 28 inch wingspan!

I should have all the pages finished within the next week and a half, so expect to see quite a few more during that time. I’m super excited to be working on this, but more excited to being ever closer to completing it.

Once this book and Bearfight are released, I’m diving right back into Baby Otto, for all you fans who have been missing the little tyke (myself included). The next volume is written and partially thumbnailed.

My Bearfight Submission

With all the working to get Bearfight together, I totally forgot to show my submission.

Thank you to everyone who submitted to Bearfight. I received about 120 submissions from about 115 different artists, and it was difficult work to pare that down to the 75 that made the final book. I’m still partially finished printing the covers, but I’m shooting for an early April release date for the finished book.

If anyone submitted to Bearfight, expect an email late tonight on whether or not you got in the book.

The IPRC: What are You Making?

Some of my perfect bound books and whatnot are featured in this short documentary about the Independent Publishing Resource Center. It’s narrated mostly by Jesse Reklaw. My books show up around 2:30.

Also, only TWO MORE DAYS to submit something to BEARFIGHT! I’ve got a lot of good submissions already, but there’s always room for more.

Bearfight! Covers

Here is the front side of the wraparound cover for BEARFIGHT! The brown will be chipboard, and… AND… the white will be flocked. That’s right, fuzzy covers!

If you haven’t gotten your submission in yet (thank you to those who have), you still have about a week, so get on it! Deadline for submissions is March 10th.

Uganda, With Life Postcard

This is a little postcard-sized original for an upcoming show (March 4th) at PNCA called “Uganda, With Life.” The show is a fund-raiser for human rights groups working in Uganda to oppose the recent drafting of an anti-homosexuality bill back in October 2009. Hundreds of postcards, of all thematic variety, will be featured in the show and sold on a sliding scale to raise money.

On a totally selfish note, it was really fun to get to work on something that is not my thesis project or paper right now.
