Crafty Wonderment!

Man’s Face Stuff took part in our first official show on Sunday, Crafty Wonderland, at the Portland Convention Center. There were somewhere around like 300 vendors, all selling their homemade wares. 7,500+ attendees showed up during the eight hours of the show, and we, and our giant moustache, were situated only a few tables away from the entrance doors; prime real estate. We split a booth with Dane, a friend and chocolatier who happens to make chocolate moustaches on a stick, amongst other delectable delights, so our tables went quite well together. Dane’s website is www.pinkwhitebrown.com.

But BT, what’s that sign look like from the other side?

How about that friendly face? You’d be hard pressed NOT to buy wax from a fella like that!

We converted an old kid’s school desk I already had as our little wax stand and it worked perfectly. Fun, fun times at Crafty Wonderland. We’re hoping to take part in the next CW show in May, this one was a blast and a half.

Gotta Do What You Gotta Do Biker

This image of a biker rockin’ through the desert was created as an illustration class assignment to create an image for self-promotional materials. I’m thinking of things on a little grander scale than just this single image though; my plan is to illustrate my “rules to live by” I guess. This is the first of eight to ten illustrations that will be printed and bound together as a promotional portfolio book.

Each illustration will cover a phrase that I use often, such as “Gotta do what you gotta do,” or some other phrase that describes a personal standard by which I live my life. Each will have the phrase itself integrated into the illustration.

I will have two more completed before the end of my semester in December, and hope to finish the rest over my winter break between semesters. More as I complete them, of course.

In Man’s Face Stuff news, we just released our first, limited edition scent, just in time for winter. It’s called “Seasoned Greetings” and is scented with Peru balsam and clove, with just a touch of actual ground cinnamon mixed in to every tin. It’s like having a hot cup of mulled cider and a gingerbread cookie under your nose all day, so good. It’s limited to a very small batch of 30 tins and is available for only $12 in the Man’s Face Stuff Etsy shop.

Winter Sale: 15% discount on orders of $20+ (before shipping) from the radrobot.org store or my Etsy shop.

The Perfect Snowman

Snowman with a moustache
An illustration for greeting cards that will be sent out with every order of Man’s Face Stuff moustache wax throughout the next month. It also coincides with the release of our first, limited edition, seasonal scent, “Seasoned Greetings,” which is scented with balsam, clove, and real cinnamon. It’s like having a hot cup of mulled cider and a gingerbread cookie under your nose all day. It’s limited to a small batch of only 30 hand-numbered tins and will be for sale here before the end of the week.

15% OFF PROMO: The holiday seasons are coming up and I would like to remind everyone to please think about supporting independent artists and craftspeople when you are doing your gift giving this year. It’s not the easiest or most financially feasible thing in the world to make a living selling your own work. Now is the perfect time to not only support a community of people busting their ass to make something beautiful, but also to give as a gift something that actually has some soul and craft behind it, as opposed to some mass-produced piece of nothing. So, in order to give you even more encouragement, until Thursday, December 10th, all purchases of $20 or more (not including shipping) from either the radrobot.org store or my Etsy shop (which has my t-shirts), will receive a 15% discount! The discount will come in the form of a Paypal refund after the order is completed.

I will be adding some of the blank, perfect-bound journals I’ve been making to Etsy later this week, and some screenprinted, 2010 calendars the week after that, in case you’re not quite ready to buy today. And here are some of my favorite items I have found on Etsy lately; I’m sure their creators could all use a little love as well. Pass the word along!

Man’s Face Stuff Moustache Wax Ad +SPX +Etsy!!

This is the final for the first assignment in my illustration class this semester at Pacific Northwest College of Art. The assignment was to create a gender-specific image to be used for advertising. It just so happens that I already had a gender-specific product ready to be advertised, Man’s Face Stuff.

This was a fun illustration do do because I’ve been looking for more ways to integrate my character-based illustration with my hand-lettering; I feel like the two worlds are a little too separated at times. I really struggled in the early concept stages to come up with an image that made for a good illustration, and not something that would be better accomplished through photography. I finally stumbled onto this concept through the help of my instructor, and a raging sketch session after about 5 cups of coffee a few days later.

Also, one last bit of goodness about the Small Press Expo: I was sort of interviewed (or at least asked to talk about myself) while at my table there, and it’s all up on the YouTube! Watch me and marvel at how clean my fingernails are!

Lastly, for those of you in Portland, I will be speaking about my experiences with Etsy and the DIY community, and also introducing the main speaker, Etsy’s Matt Stinchcomb, at the “Digitally Building the DIY Community” talk at the Cyan Building tonight. The talk starts at 5:30pm, and is free and open to the public; you should come on by. The Cyan Building is located at 1720 SW 4th Ave in Portland.

Man’s Face Stuff Business Cards

We finally got some business cards made for Man’s Face Stuff. Three different designs, each with a different slogan on the front:

Styling proud moustaches the world over since 2009
Your great-grandfathers would be proud of you
and
The only thing that can make your moustache better

They’ve already gotten some use, given out to some fine moustachios around Portland.

Question for the bloggers: I’ve been feeling pretty spotty in my posting here lately; either I have something almost everyday, or I don’t post anything for like two weeks. I think I’m going to start posting specifically every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and try to keep to that schedule for a while. For those of you with similar sites, do you keep a posting schedule? If so, does it seem helpful to keep you on track?

The schedule will change to Monday-Friday when I start posting pages from the next Baby Otto in September.

Milepost 5 Mural, COMPLETE!

Friday was the opening of the “Manor of Art” show at Milepost 5. I put quite a lot of work into painting my part of the room, so I was pleased as punch to see so many people attend the opening. At times there were almost a dozen people in my room alone, and considering there were 100+ more rooms in the show, well, you do the math… I think at least one of my pieces sold opening night, hopefully at least a few more before the show comes down at the end of the month.

Best comment of the opening: One guy referred to my work as “a modern take on a drug-crazed 1930’s brain,” which he meant, and I took, as a compliment.

This guy’s thinking about it, thinking…

I didn’t realize while I was painting how awesome it is that the red dude’s faces look like they are reacting to whomever is coming through the door.

When I get the chance, I think I want to seriously explore some of the iconography I use a lot, like the waves, lightning bolts, the blue and brown drips, etc. They’ve kinda been my fallback for the last two years, but I’ve never really tried to consciously start a piece with them in mind.

One more thing: I’ve just created a Facebook fan page for Man’s Face Stuff Moustache Wax. Join up if you’re a fan! This also means I’m now on Facebook if anyone wants to find me, yup.

A Meeting of the Staches

My business partner in Man’s Face Stuff Moustache Wax, E.E. Dumas (below me in photo), and I were out for breakfast on Sunday, when by chance we ran into two of our be-whiskered patrons, Joe Wachunas and David Chow at the same restaurant, so of course pictures were taken. Feel the power.

We are currently working on some new scents, an orange and black pepper, of which I have been using the prototype wax for a while now, and some various scent mixes with fresh tobacco.

First Thursday!

I was in two different shows that opened in Portland on Thursday last week. First off, Tender Loving Empire was having a show called “Wish You Were Here,” in which all pieces had to be mailed to the gallery. Pieces were hung as they were posted, no packaging or protection, stamps and all. I didn’t get a piece mailed in, but they did let me paint the canceled stamp title on that wall in the background, which was so fun to do, and the first wall I had painted on in about 10 years. They had a really fun, packed opening too, as usual.

And, Man’s Face Stuff made it’s second debut at the Make show at Wieden+Kennedy an advertising firm here in Portland. They have offices all over the world and anyone who works for them could donate a piece to be in the show. My wax-making partner works there, so we donated some wax, and it sold, as you can see by the red pin. All sales went to help out Room to Read. Moustache wax for charity!

Also, don’t forget to look one post back for the last page of Baby Otto: Volume 4.

Man’s Face Stuff Is Go!

A friend and I just debuted our moustache wax at the Stumptown Comics Fest last weekend. It would still have been a marvelous fest without it, but I’m pretty sure the wax stole the show at my table. I don’t know how many times I heard, “I didn’t come here expecting to buy moustache wax, but now that it’s here, I guess I better!”

We make it ourselves in the most facial hair friendly city in the world, Portland. Right now we have two kinds, unscented, which actually has a slight honey scent from the beeswax, and my signature scent, “gin and tonic.” Hopefully we will be coming out with one more standard scent soon, but my business partner is a natural perfumer and would be interested in talking to you about a custom scented wax, just for you, if that’s something you might be interested in. Send an email to mansfacestuff@gmail.com for more info.

For those of you curious types, the ingredients are: beeswax, petroleum jelly, olive oil, candelilla wax, and - in gin and tonic only - natural essential oils

We don’t have an official website up yet, but www.MansFaceStuff.com will forward to our Etsy shop, or you can buy some using the PayPal button below.

Beautiful isn’t it? We mixed up a new batch on Sunday, and we thought this would make a cool photo; our wax in various states of cooling.
