8×8 Strong

Po’ Boy Art and Framing in Portland was hosting a show this last Friday called 8×8 Strong. The show’s curators gave the artists 88 words and phrases and up to five 8 by 8 inch wooden panels. I did two of them, the first of which is a take on “breakfast,” and a collaboration with my friend Liz Sherwyn.

And here’s my solo take on “hair-dos and don’ts.” I love simple little single-image paintings like this where I don’t over think anything. I’ve been planning out a little series of them I’d like to find time to do over the summer months.

The opening for the show was great, there are hundreds of pieces in the show and all were framed by Po’ Boy.

Uganda, With Life Postcard

This is a little postcard-sized original for an upcoming show (March 4th) at PNCA called “Uganda, With Life.” The show is a fund-raiser for human rights groups working in Uganda to oppose the recent drafting of an anti-homosexuality bill back in October 2009. Hundreds of postcards, of all thematic variety, will be featured in the show and sold on a sliding scale to raise money.

On a totally selfish note, it was really fun to get to work on something that is not my thesis project or paper right now.

Typo Friday #14: Everyone I Know Should Be Famous

The building that houses my studio also has a mural-only space in the entryway called the Ephemeral Gallery. A different artist comes in each month to paint a mural on this 15 by 8 foot wall space, and at the end of each month, it gets whitewashed. I got asked to do it for February, and finished it all in about 7 hours yesterday.

The phrase came from a conversation I had with a friend last week. We were discussing how many friends we both had who are artists, craftspeople, small business owners, and how we really try to support them when we can and that we sincerely wished that everyone we knew could be famous for what it is they do. That sentiment seemed appropriate for a building full of creative offices.

Here I am hard a t work. Photo by Sarah Oleksyk.

If you happen to be in Portland, it will be up the rest of the month at 412 NW Couch St. It’s right by the entryway doors, so you can even see it well at night if you come by and the doors are locked.

Progress shots and whatnot are up on my Flickr.

IPRC Mural WIP

The Independent Publishing Resource Center has recently acquired an additional room, directly across the hall from the rest of the Center. I volunteered to paint a lettered piece above the door in the new room, which will be used as an art gallery, classroom, and for perfect binding, which I supervise. I spend at least one day a week in this room, so it was important to me to be able to leave my mark on it a little bit.

It’s still a work in progress, but it’s at a nice pause point right now, so I thought I’d share.

That’s right, it’s got gold leaf! I spare nothing when it comes to the IPRC. Just a few more spots to brush away.

The gold is clean and the lettering can begin. I used a mix of latex and acrylics.

Lettering blocked in.

Outline ribbon, add shadow, erase pencils, sign, date, and we’re good! Sometime soon, I will fully finish it by lettering “Portland, Oregon” in the upper corners, but I like it where it’s at now too.

The two larger spots on either side of the door are currently being painted by the wonderful Lori D.

Cash Is King!

I believe I showed the start of this panel a month or so ago, and here it is, relatively complete. I’m really happy with the lettering. It’s pretty big for me, almost 5 by 4 feet. I’ve got another panel the same size that I’m finishing up too. This will be part of a show I’m having in December; more info on that soon.

Yes, the drippy dollar signs are gold leaf.

My OTHER Studio

Because I’m a senior this year, I have access to cheap studio space through my school. I opted to take it so I could work on some large panels for an upcoming show. Most spaces in the studio building at PNCA are essentially large cubicles, but I am in a larger space shared by four other people and no walls to separate us, which I like a lot better.

Last night, however, I felt the place looked a little too stark and white, so I decided to work on my walls a bit instead. My space is right by the front door of the studio building, so everyone will see this as they leave. There’s also an upper floor that looks down into my space; hopefully they like it. I know for sure it has already tricked a few folks into actually looking up to the ceiling.

Speaking of being a senior… that means I’m also working on my final thesis project. I haven’t brought it up here yet, but you’ll be seeing a lot in the coming months. I can say this right now: it involves a personal exploration of facial hair, which may sound funny at first, but for any of you that actually know me, you realize it’s a topic I take very seriously.

But, I’m showing you this awful Photobooth picture for a reason (not just to show off my sweet new glasses). I was issued a challenge, sort of. I will propose my thesis idea to a panel of teachers this December, and will give the final presentation of the work almost exactly six months from today. Due to the theme of my project, my thesis instructor informed me yesterday that I cannot shave for the next six months, but then have to show up with something spectacular for my presentation. That’s my kind of challenge, and hey, if it’s good enough for Alec Longstreth, it’s good enough for me. Unlike Alec though, I will not be completely shaven down at the start; I’m keeping the ’stache cause it’s hard to sell moustache wax without it.

Long Lost Paintings

I did a lot of housecleaning this weekend, and while doing so I stumbled across a tube of paintings from a painting class I took last semester. I stuffed everything into my locker as each week progressed, and I don’t think I even took any pictures as I was working on them; it’s like some strange forgotten time. Anyways, I finally snapped some photos of some of my favorites; like this elephant, from the most whimsical assignment of the class, “paint any animal from memory.”

For another assignment, the teacher gave each of us an artist she felt we had some similarity to, and hopefully one of whom we had not heard. I was given Philip Guston. I had not heard of Guston before, but had seen some of his work, with mixed feelings. I had a blast doing this self-portrait of my knuckle tattoos in his style though.

I had so much fun, in fact, that when our last assignment was to re-do a previous assignment, I decided to do another Guston-esque self portrait.

This is my favorite piece of the class; we were to paint our birth certificate, whatever that may mean to us. I chose to illustrate my rebirth: an incident with a heavily self-medicated homeless man in an alleyway many many years ago that earned me the nickname of Bigtime. I love little fetus BT floating up there.

Milepost 5 Mural, COMPLETE!

Friday was the opening of the “Manor of Art” show at Milepost 5. I put quite a lot of work into painting my part of the room, so I was pleased as punch to see so many people attend the opening. At times there were almost a dozen people in my room alone, and considering there were 100+ more rooms in the show, well, you do the math… I think at least one of my pieces sold opening night, hopefully at least a few more before the show comes down at the end of the month.

Best comment of the opening: One guy referred to my work as “a modern take on a drug-crazed 1930’s brain,” which he meant, and I took, as a compliment.

This guy’s thinking about it, thinking…

I didn’t realize while I was painting how awesome it is that the red dude’s faces look like they are reacting to whomever is coming through the door.

When I get the chance, I think I want to seriously explore some of the iconography I use a lot, like the waves, lightning bolts, the blue and brown drips, etc. They’ve kinda been my fallback for the last two years, but I’ve never really tried to consciously start a piece with them in mind.

One more thing: I’ve just created a Facebook fan page for Man’s Face Stuff Moustache Wax. Join up if you’re a fan! This also means I’m now on Facebook if anyone wants to find me, yup.

The Painting Is Almost Done!

After a long day of painting yesterday, I am pretty much completed with the mural/art installation thing I’ve been working on this last week. It’s been an incredibly rewarding experience, but I’m ready to be done, you know? I have to finish the red blob coming out of the window, and a few more pieces to hang, and then I’m done!

It’s also really nice to see pieces I completed a year or so ago and say a few weeks ago look so cohesive when viewed on the same wall.

Here’s the second part of my wall, which I just started two days ago and finished last night.

Better pics when I can take them during the day, or during the opening later this week. Thanks for following my process, I hope it’s been at least somewhat interesting.

More Painting Process

I got a little more work done on the big wall over at Milepost 5 on Monday night. Here’s where I’m at right now. I’ll be hanging smaller pieces for sale in the big blue open area. I’ll be spending all day Tuesday painting and will hopefully finish things up.

That lightning bolt is all gold leaf, by the way.

One of the other artists painting the room with me dropped out, so I claimed a little more space and started in on this before I left on Monday night. I’m going to extend the water line from the other wall into the door. Not sure what’s going in the speech bubbles yet. Ideas?
