The IPRC: What are You Making?

Some of my perfect bound books and whatnot are featured in this short documentary about the Independent Publishing Resource Center. It’s narrated mostly by Jesse Reklaw. My books show up around 2:30.

Also, only TWO MORE DAYS to submit something to BEARFIGHT! I’ve got a lot of good submissions already, but there’s always room for more.

Typo Friday #7: Ryan Heshka’s ABC Spookshow

In honor of Halloween being tomorrow and all, I thought this week’s Typo Friday should have a spooky flair to it, so I present to you Ryan Heshka’s ABC Spookshow, one of my favorite alphabet books. I bought it a few years ago and I just keep coming back to it time and time again for a fun and quick read.

Heshka does a wonderful job of mixing his retro-esque, painted illustration style with both painted and collaged type throughout the book. Each page of the book is very engaging. Here are a few of my favorite pages:

ABC Spookshow is available for a very reasonable price on Amazon.

And of course you should check out more of Ryan Heshka’s work at his website, www.ryanheshka.com

I’m working on an alphabet book for my thesis, which I made reference to on Wednesday, so I’m looking for more alphabet books for research, both those geared towards children and not. Anyone have any favorites?

Back From APE!

I got back from the Alternative Press Expo late Sunday night/early Monday morning. I spent the weekend in the clouds as it were; on the left, there was Vancouver BC’s Cloudscape Comics collective, manned by Jeff Ellis and Jonathon Dalton, and to the right the brothers Dayton, Brandon(not pictured) and Damien of Whistling Cloud.

Here’s my table setup on the second day. People really dug my new blank journals with my old screenprints as covers. I only came home with a few of those, so I’ll have to make more, and they’ll be up in the store soon too.

I also brought more prints than I usually bring to shows, which is good because they were a big seller for me. It sounds weird to say it, but I feel like I could go back to APE next year, and not bring any comics at all, but just fill my table with printed matter and stationery goods and do just fine - if not better - because there would be more of a focus to my table. Between comics, t-shirts, prints, to-do lists, journals, buttons, and moustache wax, I felt like some people were a little confused as to what exactly they should be looking for from my table.

This woman came by on Sunday fully decked out in Mighty Boosh merch, most of it homemade. I demanded to take a picture of her homemade Boosh bracelets, featuring even minor characters! There’s a shot of her other wrist on my Flickr.

Highlights of the weekend: Green Monk by table neighbor Brandon Dayton, Wuvable Oaf #1 and the Wuvable Oaf Kitty Undies t-shirt from Ed Luce, and Tiger Bee by Katy Wu.

Also, KRK Ryden bought the last copy of Baby Otto Volume 1 that I brought, which was cool; it was his last purchase of the show!

I got a ton of compliments on my moustache (many from women with their boyfriend/husband, who had to turn around as they were walking away to secretly mouth their approval at my stache!). San Francisco is an amazing city, but way too clean-shaven for my tastes. A message to the heterosexual men of San Francisco: grow some facial hair, it’ll do you some good!

Lumberjacks, Moustaches, and Coffee

Three of my favorite things!

This weekend, some friends and I returned for our second annual trip to Morton, Washington for the 67th Annual Loggers’ Jubilee. It was a blast last year, and this year did not disappoint either. I have a whole set of photos up on my Flickr.

Plus, I sneaky snuck this picture of one of the biggest, wildest moustaches I’ve ever seen.

Lastly, I’ve been meaning to plug my friend Joel’s new blog for a while. He runs his own coffee roastery called Courier Coffee Roasters. He and his employees roast the coffee and deliver it all around Portland by bicycle. He started the blog a few months ago, and even if you don’t live in Portland, it’s always an interesting look into the world of coffee, small business, bike repair, amongst other topics. Check it out here!

If you do live in Portland, click here for a list of the fine establishments that serve Courier Coffee.

So Much To-Do, Now In List Form!

As I mentioned last week, I’ve been volunteering at the Independent Publishing Resource Center and supervising the use of their new perfect binding machine. Along with the FADGE books, I’ve been doing some other experiments on the binder. Yesterday, I made these to-do list notepads because I’m a man that loves a good to-do list. Just a test really, I’ve been thinking of some other projects involving the notepad format.

If anyone’s curious about the binding process, I took a bunch of pictures last night, and I’m working up a process post for Monday.

Also, I may have a new favorite shirt. I just picked it up from the talented Frank Chimero. Frank just released three other new shirts, and has a ton of fantastic work on his site, check it out.

The Works

A friend of mine, Daniel H. Wilson, doctor of robotics, previously-blogged author of How to Survive a Robot Uprising, and friend to robots everywhere is now hosting a new show on History. It’s called “The Works,” and it premieres tonight at 10pm ET/PT.

“The Works, with the help of robotics expert and jack of all trades Daniel H. Wilson, dissects a wide range of topics from power tools to sneakers to motorcycles, uncovering their history and the unimaginable intricacies of things we take for granted.”

Make sure to watch it if you can. Check out the show’s page for more info.

P4 and SC Bot Prints by Jason Goad

I haven’t featured someone else’s robot art in a while, but when Jason Goad contacted me about these two new prints of his, I couldn’t resist. Each print is a five-color screenprint, and is, if you’ll notice, anatomically correct!

I look forward to adding these two prints alongside my other Goad robot print. Maybe you should think about doing the same.
