December Sketchbook Pages

I thought I’d post a couple pages out of the old Moleskine today. I was drunk and watching Jason and the Argonauts while doing the linework on these two.

Did this at a restaurant yesterday afternoon while waiting for my food and looking out upon the horrible wintry slush of Portland. I really like the “Dirty Snow” lettering effect. The page wasn’t soaking up the dark gray ink I was using, so the letters just pooled until I got a napkin and slowly soaked up the liquid, leaving what you see on the page.

Doodle Day

I spent a much of my day in the printmaking sphere of things, so I took a late night trip to my studio and threw a little ink around, something I’m starting to enjoy again after some time off.

Just a doodle, still finishing up a few larger projects that I can’t show yet.

Slump

I’ve been in a real art rut lately; I’ve got it pretty bad and it’s been going on about two weeks now. I just feel absolutely useless and I’m not really sure what to do about it, but I drew this tonight while sitting in my studio, unable to work on anything else.

In other news, I’ve totally figured out the winner of the Baby Otto Theme Contest (Wait, did I mention that already last week? I think I did) but I’ve been too out of it or lazy to write an official post about it. I’ve notified the winner already, so if you entered the contest and haven’t heard from me, I didn’t pick your idea, sorry. There were close to 100 entries and quite a few of those were in serious consideration. There are a few contest entries that I think will work very well for single days or short multiple day storylines, so you might see some of them in future volumes. I’ve kept track of who gave me what idea and if I end up using your idea for something, I will probably send you a free copy of that specific volume.

Also, shortly before my current slump, I did essentially complete the writing and thumbnail stages for Baby Otto #3, so once I get back on my feet again, I’ll start inking the next 25 days of Otto’s life.

Shark Week #5

This “Stache Shark” is by request of one of my LiveJournal friends, and I was happy to oblige. There are only two days left of shark week, and I’ve realized I haven’t posted the link to the Flickr group since day one, so go see more sharks!

Speaking of sea creatures, I’ve been doing a lot of screenprinting lately. This octopus is an experimental, 7-color print, which is the most colors I’ve ever put down on one piece before. I wanted to do a multi-color print without using a computer at all, just using ink to draw my positives on mylar, and I wouldn’t decide what the next layer would be until I printed the previous layer. I had printed three colors before my roommate recommended the octopus idea. I want to do more prints like this soon, but maybe a few less colors and slightly more planned out. I’ll be putting these up in my Etsy shop for cheap later today, along with some other newer things. Might be open for trades too if anyone wants one.

Shark Week #4

I don’t think of this shark’s “kill” as being menacing in any way, in my head it’s more like how Arlo Guthrie says it in “Alice’s Restaurant,” if you happen to know that one.

“And I went up there, I said, “Shrink, I want to kill. I mean, I wanna, I wanna kill. Kill. I wanna, I wanna see, I wanna see blood and gore and guts and veins in my teeth. Eat dead burnt bodies. I mean kill, Kill, KILL, KILL.” And I started jumpin up and down yelling, “KILL, KILL,” and he started jumpin up and down with me and we was both jumping up and down yelling, “KILL, KILL.” And the sargent came over, pinned a medal on me, sent me down the hall, said, “You’re our boy.”

Been A While, I Know…

I have 18 pages left to ink on The Life & Times of Baby Otto Zeplin: Volume Two. I’m going to wait until I get down to 12 or so before I post any, to make sure you get an uninterrupted stream of Otto heading to the finish line. I’ve been finishing two a day for the last few days and it’s the only project on my plate at the moment.

For those of you that still remember from months ago, the Baby Otto theme contest is still going on, and will be until Volume Two is finished. I’m going to create a page here soon with a running list of theme ideas, so watch out. As a reminder: four of the ten eventual volumes of Baby Otto will be “themed.” That is, there is some sort of running event, idea, character, something, throughout the entire 25-day volume. This current volume is themed, and I have ideas for two more, but I’m still open to ideas for the fourth. The submitter of the chosen theme will win a free copy of each volume as it gets released. More soon…

Sketchbook Friday!

I’ve been happy with my little sketchbook lately, so I wanted to post a few things I’ve drawn since my last sketchbook post. The Portland Art Museum’s special exhibit right now is “The Dancer,” featuring the work of Edgar Degas, Jean-Louis Forain, and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. I was most struck by the work of Forain, whom I had never even heard of previously; much of his ink and watercolor linework is just so “current” looking and I was blown away by how right at home I felt seeing his brushwork, as though I was looking at my own lines sometimes. There’s also a preponderance of facial hair in his work, so you know I’m a fan.

Left side doodled while watching How To Draw A Bunny (highly recommended), right side during 9 to 5 (also highly recommended). These are both drawn in ink an Dr. P.H. Martin’s Concentrated Watercolor, a product a friend recently urged me to try. I bought a small selection of colors and I’m not sure if I like them quite yet, but I haven’t really pushed them too much yet.

And a different friend just turned me on to Speedball’s Super Pigmented Acrylic Ink, which I have fallen head over heels in love with. Not all the color options are that great, but the ones that work are amazing; flat and intense color.

Sketchbook Time.

Left side drawn from a photo at www.shorpy.com, one of my favorite sites out there.

I’ve been carrying around a small Moleskine sketchbook for about a month now. It’s so much more accessible than whipping out my big sketchbook (which of course I still keep but use only for notes and sketches for assignments or freelance work). When I pull out the small book, I have no worries whatsoever about making anything look polished, it’s just more about the feel of putting something down on paper. I think it’s not only upped my speed but also my confidence in pure mark-making, as everything you see here went straight to ink, no pencils. Here are a few of my favorite pages from the last month.

This post is also a good window into the three materials I almost never leave the house without lately, my Pentel Pocket Brush, a water brush filled with a light ink wash instead of just water, and usually about four colors of Sharpie paint markers.

Ghost bomb ended up becoming an etching, which I’ll post when I get a final edition scanned. The top right drawing garnered a friendly, but mis-guided “Oh, I like that!” from a waitress in the restaurant I was sitting, after which I almost instantaneously snapped the book shut, slightly embarrassed. Also, some fan art for my buddy, Brybox.

Self-explanatory.

Like ghost bomb before it, the left side here also got turned into an etching entitled “My Other Automobile is an Ornithopter.” Right side is Phil Bunyan, were he a small deer. (And yes, the page was very smudgy, although it doesn’t show in the scan)

Mummy drawn during class and a guy I drew from memory after glancing up and seeing him on CNN yesterday.
